Twitter shut down Periscope video service

The Periscope app, which popularized live streaming from smartphones, closed on March 31, just over six years after launch. The service has already been removed from app stores, and most of the functions are no longer available. The Periscope website will remain online for now with an archive of public broadcasts. Periscope users will still be able to upload their data via Twitter.

“That’s all. Our last goodbye Today is the last day the Periscope app will be available. We leave you and thank all the creators and viewers who have made the Periscope community brighter. We hope to see all of you on Twitter, ” reads the official Periscope channel.

Live streaming is now proposed to be conducted within Twitter – the social network acquired Periscope in March 2015, just a few weeks before the service launch. Twitter announced the upcoming shutdown in December, stating that the number of users was dwindling and the app had been in an unstable technical state for some time.

Live streaming became a big phenomenon in March 2015 with the debut of Periscope and another app called Meerkat. Although Meerkat came out first, Periscope quickly dethroned him with the support of Twitter and became the leader of live streaming.

However, the phenomenon seemed to subside just as quickly. Facebook, for example, has actively promoted live streaming on its own service, but neither platform has achieved a dominant stand-alone community around such functionality. In December 2016, Twitter added the ability to host live streams directly from its own app, thus questioning the need for Periscope to exist as a separate service.
