Microsoft has just started distributing Windows 10 May 2020 Update, version 2004 and codenamed 20H1. The rumours of the past few days (and a few hours ago) have therefore proved to be correct.

WHEN IT ARRIVES AND HOW TO DOWNLOAD

Initially, as usual, the functional update will only appear to users who are actively looking for it from the Windows Settings ( Update and Security > Windows Update > Check for updates ). Again, Windows 10 2004 may not appear due to known bugs with its hardware configuration. If it does appear, however, you will need to press the relevant Download and install button.

Over the next few weeks, as bugs are resolved with cumulative updates, the feature update will be offered to an increasing number of configurations, but always to “seekers”; at some point, however, it will appear on Windows Update on its own, but it will never install automatically: Microsoft has decided to abandon this practice and always leave the choice to the end-user.

Here are some of the most important changes introduced with the new update:

  • Manage Bluetooth connections from notifications, no need to enter Settings.
  • Ability to abandon passwords in favour of biometric, PIN or two-factor authentication on supported devices.
  • The Kaomoji catalog increases.
  • Ability to name virtual desktops.
  • Support for third-party widgets on the Xbox Game Bar.
  • DirectX 12 Ultimate bring more fluidity, more detail without reducing the framerate in any way.
  • Less memory consumption for Microsoft Edge thanks to UWP’s memory management system. Edge is the first WIn32 app to take advantage of it.
  • The calculator can always stay on top.
  • Notepad includes some search improvements, the ability to zoom and the asterisk appears in the title bar indicating the presence of changes not saved in the open file.
  • Your Phone: the call function arrives on Windows computers with an ARM processor.
  • Cortana: possibility to communicate with the virtual assistant via chat (for now the only USA).
  • The narrator offers new features and is more responsive. You can request the summary of a web page and there are improvements in the management of the tables.
  • Magnifier has a new feature whereby the text cursor remains in the centre of the screen.
  • Drag & drop support in eye-tracking control.
  • New language setting page.
