AI anti-aliasing AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution coming to all RDNA GPUs, including Xbox and PlayStation

More and more details about its AI-based smart anti-aliasing technology FidelityFX are gradually becoming clear. Some of them were told by AMD itself during yesterday’s announcement of the Radeon RX 6700 XT, and some were shared by third-party sources.

Yesterday AMD did not detail FidelityFX but talked about improved Radeon Boost technology, which increases frame rates by dynamically decreasing the resolution. Combined with the upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution feature, this is expected to deliver high performance while minimizing original image quality loss.

NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) feature, similar to FidelityFX, already gives Ampere and Turing GPUs a clear advantage. But the road to success was not easy. First-generation DLSS required custom optimizations for games and resulted in a noticeable loss of detail and image blur. After the release of DLSS 2.0, the technology became an important trump card for NVIDIA. AI-powered supersampling is gaining in importance as the list of games that support resource-intensive realistic lighting expands. Some games would not have delivered acceptable ray-traced frame rates at all if not for DLSS.

While AMD hasn’t confirmed when its FidelityFX Super Resolution will be available, YouTube host Linus Tech Tips has provided additional information on the matter. Linus Sebastian claims that AMD will launch the technology for all RDNA platforms at once. He argues that the company is committed to making the technology cross-platform. It will be launched simultaneously on Radeon RX video cards and game consoles Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. It is unknown where this information was obtained from – perhaps the information was announced confidentially at a briefing before the event.

Apparently, instead of rushing to release [FidelityFX Super Resolution ] on just one new high-end card, they want it to be cross-platform in every sense of the word. So, in fact, they want the technology to work on all of their GPUs, including the ones inside their consoles, before pulling the trigger. It would be nice if it were ready by the time the graphics cards were released, but, as we saw in the example of NVIDIA ‘s DLSS 1.0 versus DLSS 2.0, such a scenario may even be for the better” Linus Sebastian said.

AMD’s implementation of AI anti-aliasing is assumed to be based on the DirectX API, part of the Windows Machine Learning library. It can be used not only on PC but also easily transferred to Xbox. However, it is unclear how FidelityFX Super Resolution will be implemented on the PlayStation 5. Luckily for AMD, both consoles use RDNA-based GPUs, and for gamers, this could mean the technology will indeed be polished to run on all devices.

Although FidelityFX Super Resolution, due to the DirectX API’s use, should work on any accelerators, including NVIDIA GeForce video cards, the maximum return will still be observed in Radeon video cards. And the latest Radeon RX 6000 can deliver the best performance with 128MB of fast Infinity Cache. Machine learning algorithms tend to require high memory bandwidth, and this is what this cache is for.
