Google Chrome browser stops working on older PCs

Pre-Intel Core 2 Duo processors

Google is ending support for several older processors in its Chrome browser.

Google Chrome browser stops working on older PCs

Starting with Chrome 89, the browser will not support x86 processors that do not have the SSE3 (Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3) instruction set.

The Windows 10 operating system itself requires at least the SSE2 command set. Mostly pre-Intel Core 2 Duo processors such as Intel Atom and Celeron M will no longer be supported. Most processors released after 2005 support SSE3.

Chrome 87 and later users will soon start receiving end of support warnings. In Chrome 89, the installer will no longer attempt to install the browser on these PCs. In fact, the software will crash when launching.

Apparently, in reality, the restrictions will only affect Windows. Since ChromeOS, Android and macOS already require SSE3 to work.
