Mobile GeForce RTX 3070 flashed in the benchmark: performance is worse than RTX 3060 Ti

The V-Ray 5 synthetic benchmark database, designed to test the performance of graphics accelerators in real-time ray tracing (RTX) tasks, has revealed the first performance results of the mobile version of the GeForce RTX 3070 video card. It is assumed that NVIDIA Ampere mobile solutions will be presented at the beginning of next year.

According to the test results, the mobile GeForce RTX 3070 scored 1394 points, which is about 8% less than the result of the desktop version of the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti based on the GPU GA104, which scored 1503 points in the same test. The mobile GPU also lost (but not much) to the desktop flagship of the Turing series, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which uses the first generation of RT cores. In this test, the latter showed a result of 1455 points.

The technical specifications of the mobile GeForce RTX 30-series are still unknown. However, according to VideoCardz, NVIDIA will not use the same chips for them as for the desktop versions. For example, in the near future, we are unlikely to see video cards with characteristics close to the desktop model GeForce RTX 3080 in the composition of laptops. Instead, the mobile version of the RTX 3080 will presumably be equal in performance only to the desktop version of the GeForce RTX 3070 and will be equipped with the same number of shader cores ( 5888 pieces).

Predicting the specifications of the mobile RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 is even more difficult. Perhaps the mobile RTX 3070 will receive the same number of CUDA cores as the desktop version of the RTX 3060 Ti. At the moment, it is only confirmed that the mobile  RTX 3070 will receive 8 GB of video memory. But the performance of a mobile graphics card is likely to be lower – primarily due to the heat-limiting mobile form factor.

It should be recalled that NVIDIA has several variants of the same mobile GPUs. For example, the Max-P versions offer the highest level of performance and are typically found in larger gaming laptops. Numerous Max-Q variants, for which lower power limits are usually declared, are in turn more often used in more compact solutions where energy efficiency is important. Typically, chips of this version are limited to a TDP of 30-40 watts. Unfortunately, in the above V-Ray test, the specific version of the mobile GeForce RTX 3070 is not indicated in any way.
