Mortal Kombat Filmmakers Showcase Sub-Zero, Jax And More In First Images
There are only a few months left before the next film adaptation of Mortal Kombat finally hits the screens. To maintain interest in the project, Warner Bros. decided to throw off the veil of secrecy and share the first images and details of the story of the film coming out in April.
Mortal Kombat has been rebooted for a long time: Warner Bros. first named the director and screenwriter – Simon McQuoid and Greg Russo, respectively – back in 2016. However, despite the long time that has passed, not to mention the upcoming release date, there have been surprisingly few details so far.
That all changed, however, thanks to a fresh interview with Entertainment Weekly, released alongside a large set of early images from the film. In an interview with reporters, Mr McQuoid spoke about his work on the film adaptation of the cult game series. There are tons of plot details in this article, but we will only touch on the main points to avoid spoilers.
It all starts with a “rather rough” battle scene, which outlines the conflict between the Hanzo Hasashi and Bi-Han clans in feudal Japan. These fighters, we recall, later became Scorpio and Sub-Zero – in the film they are played by Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim, respectively.
After that, the action is transferred to our days and the film tells the story of the adventures of former MMA fighter Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, a completely new character in the Mortal Kombat universe, who will also find his place in the conflict caused by the invasion of the emperor of the Outworld.
To those following the film’s information, this information may sound familiar – indeed, it is broadly consistent with the 2018 ThatHashtagShow reporting that the film’s plot would be centred around a Philadelphia boxer who was hired by a prophecy hunter to participate. in a fantastic tournament.

So far, there have been two full-length adaptations of Mortal Kombat. The original 1995 film directed by Paul Anderson proved to be highly successful and is still considered one of the best film adaptations of games. It featured many classic characters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Sonya, as well as Shang Tsung, Reptile, Scorpio, Sub-Zero, and even Goro. With a budget of $ 20 million, he grossed $ 120 million worldwide.
