MSI Intel X299 Core-X Resizable BAR Support Confirmed

Earlier this week, MSI announced support for Resizable BAR (or AMD Smart Access Memory) technology for the AMD Threadripper platform. The company is now poised to provide similar opportunities for enthusiasts with Intel Core-X platforms. MSI will soon release a beta BIOS for its latest X299 family of motherboards.

The main BIOS update is support for the Resizable BAR feature, which improves graphics performance, including the AMD Radeon RX 6000 and NVIDIA RTX 30 series. Like the AMD Threadripper TRX40 platform, this BIOS version is currently proposed to be installed at your own risk for Intel HEDT owners. WCCFTech reporters confirmed that Resizable BAR does indeed work on MSI X299 motherboards:

The test platform on which the new functionality was tested includes an MSI MEG X299 Creation motherboard, an 18-core Intel Core i9-10980XE Cascade Lake-X processor, and a GeForce RTX 3090 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 graphics card. The screenshots show that the functionality is available on HEDT platforms and MSI is the first motherboard manufacturer to achieve this.

There are no performance metrics yet, but improvement will depend on the specific game. MSI offers the broadest support for Resizable BAR (or AMD Smart Access Memory) to date on Intel 300 series and AMD 400 series chipsets.

Recall that Resizable BAR technology has been part of the PCI Express interface specifications since version 2.0, but only last fall AMD drew public attention to it, implementing support under the name Smart Access Memory in its Radeon RX 6000 series video cards. access to the entire array of video memory, while Windows PCs without this function can simultaneously access no more than 256 MB. This removes I / O bottlenecks and AMD claims it can deliver up to 10-15% performance gains in select games.
