New feature of Google Chrome will increase the energy efficiency of the browser

Developers from Google continue to experiment with new features of the Chrome browser designed to save battery power on mobile devices. One such feature, called the Battery-Savings Meta Tag, will allow sites to prompt Chrome for different settings to apply when displaying content based on the current power-saving settings.

It’s no secret that not only applications but also websites can be resource-intensive. Chrome browser has long been known as a resource-intensive application, and many people are forced to give up working with it if the battery of the device they are using is low and there is no way to connect to the mains.

The new feature will optimize device battery life or CPU usage on specific sites. Websites will be able to detect if the OS being used is in power-saving mode. According to the available data, in order for this feature to work, a certain code must be added to websites. Thanks to this, sites will be able to automatically reduce the frame rate or slow down the speed of execution of various scripts. After receiving a request from the site, Chrome will automatically apply the energy efficiency settings until the user navigates to another resource.

Obviously, the new feature will be well received by users who are used to interacting with Chrome but have to give it up when the battery of their device starts to run out. The Battery-Saving Meta Tag is expected to arrive in Chrome 86 or 87. It is currently available to developers through the Origin Trials platform.
