Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed on Monday that a USB-C port will provide faster charging speeds for the iPhone 15, but only with certified cables.

According to Kuo, Apple is optimizing USB-C fast charging performance on iPhone 15 models. Currently, iPhone 14s support a maximum charging speed of up to 20W and Pro models up to 27W. This means that users will be able to charge their iPhones faster, but only if they have the right charger and cable.

The company no longer ships the iPhone with a power adapter, so users need to buy a new one if they don’t already have a compatible charger at home. The company’s most affordable option is the 20W USB-C adapter, but Apple also has a 30W adapter that costs $39.

But even in this case, there is another catch. Kuo claims the faster charging speeds will only work with Apple-certified USB-C cables. So, even if you have a compatible adapter, it may not provide full iPhone power without the right cable.

Earlier this year, insider ShrimpApplePro already reported that Apple would offer MFi (Made for iPhone) certification for USB-C accessories. The insider also revealed that cables without MFi certification will have limited charging speeds. This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to use your USB-C cables with your iPhone 15. They just won’t provide full speed.

Kuo also reveals that while the entire iPhone 15 line will get a USB-C port, only the Pro models will support USB 3.2 for faster data transfer speeds. Regular iPhone 15 models will continue to work with the slower USB 2.0.

Apple will increase shipments of its 20W USB-C power adapter by 120% with the launch of the iPhone 15, Kuo said, as many users will be forced to buy new adapters with a USB-C port.
