India bans TikTok, WeChat, and about 60 other apps

These mobile applications pose a threat to national security and a risk to the privacy of citizens’ personal data.

The government of India has announced that it has banned the use of 59 mobile applications in the country, including TikTok, WeChat, and Mi Community. The Indian Ministry of Information Technology “received many complaints from various sources, including several reports of the misuse of certain mobile applications available on Android and iOS platforms to steal and secretly transfer user data to servers located outside of India.”

The Indian Ministry of the Interior and the Computer Incident Response Team (CERT-IN) confirm that these mobile applications pose a threat to national security and a risk to the privacy of Indian citizens. Therefore, the Government of India decided to ban the use of these applications.

The list includes a file manager, a document scanner, a memory cleaner, an independent exchange service, as well as the Baidu application, the UC Alibaba browser, and the QQ Tencent application ecosystem. Xiaomi has become the only smartphone manufacturer whose proprietary application has been blocked in India.
