TikTok may suffer the fate of Huawei

Extremely popular among young people, the TikTok social network fell out of favor in the USA. First, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the administration was considering banning TikTok in the U.S. due to privacy and national security issues, but U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken on the same subject. And here it was no longer about security, but simply about punishment. As is the case with Huawei.

TikTok ban in the USA is revenge for coronavirus

“Look what happened to China with this virus, what they did to this country and to the whole world is shameful, ” he said, commenting on Pompeo’s words. Trump also added that the TikTok ban is “one of many” options that he is considering to punish China for the coronavirus. Recall that in March of this year, Trump was already threatening to call the coronavirus “the Chinese virus” in response to a statement by the office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry that the US military delivered the coronavirus to Wuhan.

I wonder how Trump’s words contradict Pompeo’s. It is possible that in reality TikTok poses no threat to the United States, and banning such a popular application in a very large market is just one more lever of pressure on China.
