TikTok Coming To Group Chats This Year If Rumors Are True
TikTok, a short video publishing platform, may launch a group messaging feature this year. This is reported by the Reuters news agency, relying on sources familiar with the matter. This innovation will allow TikTok to compete directly with major social networks such as Facebook.
Group chats are part of ByteDance’s plan to develop TikTok into a social interaction app. It’s worth noting that Douyin, the Chinese-market version of TikTok, has been offering users this capability since 2019. ByteDance understands that the group chat feature will allow TikTok to keep users on the app for longer. The social network will also expand its streaming and e-commerce capabilities, which will significantly increase its revenues.
It is worth noting that the possibility of introducing group chats into the application was considered last year. Still, this issue was postponed due to difficulties caused by the ban of India’s service and criticism from the then US President Donald Trump. Current President Joe Biden has suspended a lawsuit that could lead to a de facto ban on the United States app.
Sources say TikTok is currently planning when and in which regions it will launch group chats. It is also reported that the messaging service is likely to be unencrypted. TikTok itself has not yet commented on this information.
